Attukal Pongala is a famous occasion in Kerala related to Temple festivals. This event is known as the world’s largest group worship by women in a temple. This holy event is dedicating to the Attukal Devi and 1.5milion women are offering Pongala (boil over) at the same moment. Guinness Book of World Records are noting this moment due to the biggest throng of women devotees taking part in this festival occasion. Attukal Devi Temple is a small temple at Trivandrum and known as ‘the Sabarimala of Women’. Attukal Pongala is a festival holding annually and in all over Kerala, women are participating in the moment.
The particular ritual known as Pongala means ‘to boil over’ and it refers to the customary of things which pleases the goddess. This is also a festival of social harmony and the devotees and pilgrims are coming together from different status and life style. Pongala is sweet rice, prepared in earthen pots with rice, jiggery and coconut. This festival is only for women.
The ancient mythology related to Attukal Devi is coming in the old prescriptions in Silappathikaram (by a Tamil Poet in the 2 A.D). Kannaki is the heroine in this Poem and the temple is dedicated to her.
