You might have been thinking of using dental braces for your kids but it may be true that your child is thinking the possible ways of get rid of the horrors of braces. After all dental braces are bulky, unpleasant, painful, and not look good. Another point is to remember is that they need to stick the braces for at least one and half years on an average. This feels like an eternity when your child is at 12 years old.

Apart from that there are concerns about the aesthetic beauty of your child’s face. As the traditional braces made of metals they are sure to make your child’s life hell. However, with the modern hidden braces this problem can be solved. Here are some important do’s and don’ts and other important tips that you need to consider to make the experience of having braces a little more comfortable and less painful for your kids:

Think about the food your child is going to intake with braces: There are some particular foods that your child should not intake during the orthodontic treatment process. You must make your kids aware about that. Generally, very sticky and chewy foods such as gum, popcorn kernels, caramels and taffy should be avoided when you are undergoing an orthodontic treatment. You children should also avoid other popular foods such as fruit roll ups, starbursts and skittles. These types of foods can easily get stuck in the braces and might create problem. It will also make it difficult to clean the braces.

In addition you also need to avoid very sweet food as it too often can cause cavities, especially with braces. It can also cause damage to the braces as well as elastics. During the dental braces treatment the patient actually needs to eat softer foods such as jello, applesauce, soups, eggs, rice, oatmeal, and yogurt. This will minimize your pain as well as discomfort. This won’t cause any damage to your hidden braces and will be easier to eat.

Care your braces regularly: As children are not aware about the process of cleaning and caring their braces you should take the initiative to clean and care the braces almost regularly. Though it is quite challenging, it’s important to continue flossing even with your braces. You need to remove the food stuck in the braces after each meal. If you feel it difficult to floss your teeth, you need to ask your orthodontist for help. Brushing your teeth at every night and morning is also very important.

Consult your orthodontist when your child is not feeling OK with the braces:  It’s not quite uncommon to have discomfort and sometimes, pain with dental braces. During such a situation you must consult your dentist. Sometimes, there might be some problem in the aligners, or the elastic or the brackets may be broken. You should never attempt to adjust or fix them as you may up causing more pain. If your kids feel something uncomfortable and pain, rush to the dentist and let him/her examine the situation and fix the problem immediately.

What should you do to relief the pain? It’s a normal fact to have pain in teeth after first getting your braces on, or after they get tightened. You don’t need to do anything during such situations as it is a normal pain and can be recovered within 2/3 days. In some cases you can use anesthetic gel like Orajel.
